What to do in Maupiti

Like its neighbor Bora Bora, Maupiti is made up of a mountainous main island surrounded by several large motus (islets) encircling a beautiful blue lagoon. A great place for a peaceful and relaxing holiday.

To explore Maupiti, there are a number of activities available. The motu offer a wonderful setting, perfect for a few days of recharging your batteries. Your pension (guest house) or a service provider will be able to provide you with rentals so you can explore the main island by bike and cycle the 11 km around the island. Or, for the more athletically inclined, organize a day's mountain hike to the island's finest 360° viewpoint, overlooking the incredible sparkling lagoon!

During your walks around the island, you can stop at historical sites and monuments on the main island:

  • The Marae of Vaiahu: marae are ancient places of worship. Several Pacific kings were enthroned here.

  • The Haranae petroglyphs: carvings of crabs and turtles in the stone located near the village of Vaiea.

  • The Lizard Cave: located near Tereia beach. This cave is the subject of a Polynesian legend explaining the origin of another island, Moorea.

  • The Hotu cliffs: overlooking the village, they offer an impressive view. But do not try to climb them without a professional guide.

The lagoon also has a lot to offer : by kayak, boat or swimming, spend some days enjoying the warm water.  You'll find beautiful beaches, especially on the motu, from which you can explore the underwater world by snorkeling or scuba diving. Manta rays are plentiful on Maupiti! Don't hesitate to book a manta ray discovery excursion for your next vacation in Maupiti, it's one of the island's must-do activities. During your dives and snorkeling trips in the blue water, you will also encounter sharks and numerous species of fish thriving around the coral heads.

And if you travel to The Islands of Tahiti between August and October, you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of humpback whales near the motu. Every year, the whales come to Polynesian waters to give birth in the Society Islands and the Austral Islands.

Of course, relaxation is also a part of the experience! Take the time to relax in the shade of the coconut palms on the white sandy beach of Tereia. With its romantic, paradisiacal atmosphere, it is absolutely perfect for honeymooners. Enjoy the view at the end of the day: the sunset lights up the sky with a thousand colors. A sight that will surely remain etched in your memory! During the day, you can also walk across the lagoon on the large sandbar between Plage Tereia and motu Auira.

Maupiti is sure to make you fall in love with Tahiti Et Ses Îles, its landscapes, its people and its culture. The island boasts many marae, archaeological sites and petroglyphs. You'll be able to immerse yourself in Polynesian history and better understand the local customs and legends.
